5 Warning Signs Your Car Battery Is About to Fail Soon
· Hitech Auto Electrical
A car battery rarely fails without warning — it usually gives you a week or two of subtle signs first, if you know what to look for. Catching it early means a planned replacement at a time that suits you, rather than a flat battery in a car park after work.
1. Slow cranking
If the engine takes a fraction longer to turn over than usual, that’s often the first sign. A battery losing capacity struggles to deliver full current, especially in cooler weather.
2. Dim headlights and interior lights
Notice your headlights looking a little dimmer than usual, particularly at idle? That’s a battery (or sometimes an alternator) not delivering full voltage.
3. The battery warning light
Modern cars monitor battery voltage and will flag it on the dash before things get critical. Don’t ignore it — get it checked.
4. A swollen or misshapen battery case
Heat and age can cause a battery case to swell slightly. If yours looks anything other than perfectly flat-sided, it’s worth a look.
5. It’s over 3–5 years old
Most batteries last three to five years depending on use and climate. If yours is in that range and you’re seeing any of the above, a load test will tell you exactly where it stands.
What to do about it
A proper load test — not just a voltage check — is the only way to know for certain whether a battery needs replacing, or whether the real issue is the charging system. If you’re in Mascot or the surrounding suburbs, we test batteries and charging systems for free before recommending a replacement.
