Car Air Conditioning Not Cold? The Most Common Causes

· Hitech Auto Electrical

Warm or weak air conditioning is one of the most common reasons cars come into our Mascot workshop over summer — and the cause is usually one of a short list of things, most of them straightforward to diagnose and fix.

Low refrigerant is the most common cause

Refrigerant gradually escapes through seals and hoses over time, even on a system with no obvious leak. Manufacturers generally recommend a service roughly every 12 months for exactly this reason. Low refrigerant means the system has less to work with, so cooling performance drops off well before the air stops working entirely.

A refrigerant leak

If the system needed a re-gas last year and is already weak again, there’s likely an actual leak somewhere — commonly at a hose connection, the condenser, or an O-ring seal. A proper leak detection process (not just topping up the gas again) finds the actual source.

A failing compressor

The compressor is the heart of the system, and it works harder than it should when refrigerant is low — which is one reason letting a system run low for too long can turn a simple re-gas into a much more expensive compressor replacement.

A blocked cabin filter

Sometimes the system itself is fine but airflow is restricted by a clogged pollen filter, which can feel like weak cooling even when the AC is working properly.

That musty smell when you turn it on

That’s almost always bacterial growth on the evaporator, not a refrigerant issue. An anti-bacterial clean along with a fresh cabin filter clears it up.

Getting it sorted

A proper air conditioning service checks refrigerant level, tests for leaks, inspects the compressor and cleans the system — rather than just topping up the gas and hoping. We hold a Refrigerant Trading Authorisation (No. AU24674) and handle air conditioning servicing and re-gas at our Mascot workshop.
